                Exploring Subtraction

Like addition, we can also perform subtraction in different ways. Observe some of them.

Subtract by counting Forward on a number line

Example. Subtract 48 from 62 using the number line.

Solution. Locate 48 on the number line and count up from 48 to 62.

                                                            2 + 10 + 2 = 14
                So, 62 – 48 = 14.

                breaking the Smaller number

For quick subtraction, the smaller number is broken up into parts.

Jaideep and Swati together have a total of 74 coins. If Jaideep has
32 coins, how many coins does Swati have?

                    74 - 32 = ? 74 – 30 = 44 Can you breakup
                                                                                32 in other way?

                        30 + 2 44 – 2 = 42

                So, 74 – 32 = 42
                Thus, Swati has 42 coins.

                                                                                                              55
